With Halloween almost upon us, we started off our last meeting with an all-Pack apple bobbing competition!
It was a lot of fun but cut into our den meeting time, so we had to be flexible and skip one of the activities we had planned: making Kid Friendly Baked Apples. Since we’re working on our Bear Picnic Basket elective, each of the Bears received a basket with ingredients to make this tasty snack. To make yours at home, here’s what you’ll need to do:
- Ask a grown-up to pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees, and help cut and core your apple. (You got one apple in your basket, but this recipe will make enough streussel topping for 4 apples. If you have more apples in your house you can make enough for the whole family, or save some of the topping for another time.)
- In a bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, spice mix, and butter. (You were given pre-measured amounts of each item, but if you’d like to make more yourself, click here for the full recipe!) Depending on whether your butter has been in the fridge it might be a little hard to mix in–I like to use a fork to work the ingredients into a crumble.
- Place your apples cut side up in a baking dish, top each apple with streussel mix, and drizzle with whipping cream.
- Ask your grown up to help you put the apples into the hot oven, and set a timer for 40 minutes, or until your topping is golden and apples are soft. Let them cool down for about 10 minutes, then enjoy!
While we weren’t able to make our apples together this week, we DID have the chance to talk to Heather about her role as an on-call firefighter with the East Bay Regional Parks District. We got to hear about how she helps protect our parks, and how we can be safe and responsible park-goers. Thank you so much, Heather, for the important work that you do and also for taking time to talk to our Den!
